I talk to people all the time that tell me “Why would I want a GSA Schedule? I’m outside the DC Beltway?” I always respond by letting the person know that the Federal Discretionary Spending represents 6.5% of the US economy and takes place in every corner of the country. The DC Beltwayishighly concentrated in this area which is demonstrated by the high averages of the GSA Contract Holders;Virginia [Rank 4], Maryland [Rank 7] and DC [Rank 8] with the total around 50% of all GSA Schedule small business spending. On average GSA small business firms in the Beltway have $2MM per year in GSA Contract Sales. Outside the Beltway the numbers are not has high however the average firm outside the DC Beltway has $842K per year in federal sales. Many of these firms have far less competition for these sales.

I think the most important take away is that in many of these states with low GSA Schedule counts the firms are creating their own market for their products and services. This is one of the great things regarding a GSA Schedule it gives small businesses the ability to each carve out their own federal contracting niche.
